Greetings dear friend,
Many of us resolve to improve ourselves in some capacity in the New Year: lose weight, get in shape, get a promotion, make more money, spend more time with family and friends, work less, etc. Here are some meta hacks to help you achieve your career goals. Small, simple changes lay the foundation for major progress and promotions in the future. If you have any ideas on boosting your career or inspirational books, games, or movies that you want to share, go ahead and send them here. I’d love to hear about them, and share them with the community. And if you know of anyone who would appreciate Meta Hacks like the ones this week, go ahead and have them subscribe here.
Here are my 5 hacks for this first week of 2019.
1. Set goals and monitor progress.
Start with small, incremental goals that can be achieved in a month or in a quarter. Your confidence will build as you see your progress on paper, and it will motivate you to keep up your good work. You get what you measure, so measure what matters to you.
2. Meet new people.
Networking is the lifeblood of your career. “Netflix and chill,” is easier than going out and meeting new people. But, meeting new people in your industry is what keeps you sharp, up-to-date and connected. Who you know is valuable currency, so make it part of your job to know as many people as possible. Go to industry events, have your friends in the industry introduce you to their friends and support others in their professional endeavors.
3. Develop expertise.
If you have been thinking about learning new skills, processes, technology, software, etc. now is the time to expand your expertise. You can distinguish yourself by keeping up with the latest skills and technology. As the pace of change has accelerated, industries evolve quickly, and new developments and skills are increasingly vital. Make it a habit to stay up-to-date so you get the best assignments and promotions.
4. Don’t hold grudges.
If you take things personally, it can be emotionally draining and unproductive. Assume noble intentions in others, even if you are not sure about their motives. Believe that whatever happens is done in the best interest of your employer, and not intended to sabotage you. Focus on doing outstanding work and earning the respect and support of your colleagues. Holding grudges doesn’t serve you, so let it go.
5. Stay curious.
Stay hungry. Stay informed. Take it upon yourself to read industry trade publications, follow reporters who cover your industry on social media, read books about the industry at large and by experts in the field. Attend conferences. Knowing about your business is always valuable.
